1. Welcome!
This is the fifth posting of the ACT in New England List (if you
missed the previous postings, you can read them
here). The primary purpose of this list is to inform New
Englanders of upcoming ACT training opportunities in the area.
A secondary purpose is to support the budding ACT community
here. If you hear about any ACT training in New England, please
let me know so I can get the info up on the site and out to the
list ASAP. And if you are having a training of your own, please
let me know and I will help to create a listing for you.
2. ACT
Trainings in New England.
- Elizabeth
Kubik and I will be hosting another
Introduction to ACT workshop
in Portland on Friday, October 24, 2008 from 9 am to 4:30
pm. You can register at the
HETI website. Please do not wait until the last minute
to register as this complicates planning. Contact us (joel@whitepinepsych.com)
if you have questions.
- On the
horizon: I will be doing a full-day ACT training, Making
Bold Moves: Enhancing Your Practice with Acceptance &
Commitment Therapy, for the New Hampshire Psychological
Association (NHPA) next March (2009). Check for updates
HERE.
3. Online
Trainings & Distance Learning. These trainings are not
exactly in New England, but they are available to New
Englanders.
-
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy by Steven Hayes.
This training is available online through Psychotherapy
Networker and includes CEs.
- Russ
Harris, MD is offering an online course on ACT called
ACT in a Nutshell. The e-course is described as "a
unique ten week e-course for professionals, that teaches you
how to deliver ACT simply, quickly and effectively." Russ
has other e-courses scheduled for release in June and August
of 2008. Click
HERE for details.
4. Other
Trainings. Another place to find ACT trainings is at
conferences that cater to behavioral and cognitive-behavioral
therapists. The
Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) annual
conference in November will be held in Orlando in November
and has several ACT-related events including an invited address,
The Roots of Compassion, by Steven Hayes on Friday of
that weekend, and a
Master Clinician Series, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy
for Anxiety Disorders, by John P. Forsyth and Georg H.
Eifert. It is likely that there will be other ACT programming
at the conference; check the ABCT conference schedule online as
it develops.
**Reminder:
The full listing of ACT trainings nationwide and worldwide is
available at the
ACBS site.**
5. New
Online Content.
·
ACT in Oceania II*. Several
powerpoint presentations from the recent conference in New
Zealand are now available.
·
The History of ACT/RFT: Observations from an
Eyewitness.* This
talk (audio) was given by Rob Zettle at the Second World
Conference on ACT, RFT, and Contextual Behavioral Science held
in London, July 2006.
·
Canonical Works: The Contextual Behavioural
Roots of ACT & RFT* (Wilson, Hayes, Sandoz). Another
presentation (audio) from the World Conference in London
that situates ACT in the behavior analytic tradition.
Other audio content can be accessed on
this page of the ACBS site.
·
Videos. There are
two new videos in the ACT for the Public section.
Both videos are geared for the public but also provide nice
non-technical presentations on ACT:
a.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Addressing Chronic
Illness with Steven C. Hayes, PhD
b.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Addressing Trauma
with Jacqueline Pistorello, PhD
·
ACT/RFT Readers Update. Robyn Walser and
Maggie Chartier continue to compile and edit an ACT/RFT
Readers Update comprising short reviews of journal articles
on ACT/RFT. This is particularly helpful for the RFT research,
which can be difficult to digest if you are unfamiliar with the
basic theory behind RFT. Their most recent edition of the
Update can be found at
this page on the ACBS site.
*Some content requires ACBS membership to access. Remember, you
can
join for $1.
6.
Behavioral Training. ACT has generated interest among an
unusually diverse group of therapists, including many with
little or no formal education in behavioral learning theory.
After being introduced to ACT, you may find that a better
understanding of behavioral models and operant principles will
greatly enhance your use of ACT. In response, members of the
Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS) and have
begun to provide introductory workshops at ACT conferences and
have encouraged online and distant learning.
Conceptualizing
client problems from a behavioral perspective is certainly a
“use it or lose it” skill, so even those of us with behavioral
training can benefit from a refresher course. One recent (and
current) example was the formation of a Behavioral Study Group
(BSG) via the ACT Listserv on Yahoo!, with participants
reviewing and discussing chapters from
The ABCs of Human Behavior (Ramnero & Torneke, 2008), an
excellent text on behavioral principles for clinicians. Here
are a couple of other opportunities for learning about
behaviorism online:
·
Getting Behavioral About ACT: An Online Crash
Course in Contemporary Behavior Analysis with Chad Drake.
Start date: October 6th, 2008, 9-10:30AM, PST. Read more
about this course
HERE.
·
Analysis of Behavior: A Program for
Self-Instruction. The B.F. Skinner Foundation provides this
learning tool
online. (Note: The program was not functioning as of the
date of this newsletter; please check back if interested).
Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoyed the update. Please send
me your thoughts and feedback. Feel free to forward this to
anyone you know to be interested in ACT.
Sincerely,
Joel
